how to wear a statement necklace (t+j design style challenge)

t + j’s Designs style challenge:

“Take a piece of jewelry, maybe a statement piece that you don’t wear often but would like to or just your favorite stand out piece and put an outfit together.”

What fun! Bold statement accessories are one of the things about winter fashion that I love best.

Bold statement jewelry can be intimidating and is not an everyday item for everyone, but fear not! With the right outfit, bold jewelry can be beautifully feminine and dazzling.

Below is a beautiful statement necklace I found at Banana Factory Store. I love the mix of textures and color in this necklace, which I continued in my outfit: a blue cashmere sweater dress, a black tulle-y slip, and a metallic leather-like belt.

Top: Free People Sweater Dress, Free People Slip
Bottom: Gap Belt, INC Pumps
What’s New at Free People

A dark dress creates a nice backdrop for a bold statement necklace, and a metallic belt from the same color family defines the waist and complements the necklace. Also, wearing hair (it’s an accessory too!) up instead of down can help prevent long hair from competing with your jewelry.

After taking so much care to showcase a beautiful statement necklace, the final step is to make sure that the necklace itself hangs correctly. When setting the length of an adjustable necklace:

Avoid setting the necklace length such that the collar of your top cuts into your necklace. This can cause the necklace to hang awkwardly, curling up on itself, which will look clumsy and distract from the beauty of your necklace and the rest of your outfit.

Adjust short necklaces to sit and end above the collar of your top. This allows your collar to showcase the jewelry, acting as a natural frame for your necklace and letting it shine in all of its bold beauty.

A statement necklace can be the perfect finishing touch to a holiday outfit or a coveted holiday gift (one size fits all!) for a special lady. Time to spread the holiday cheer!

bows galore

Bows.  They’re so simple that we learn how to make them when we’re 5 years old and trying to keep our shoes on our feet.  Terribly practical.

But when I was little and learning how to tie my shoes, it was instead mostly because I thought the laces were ugly when they were untied–I wanted the prettiness of a bow!

There’s just something about the classic bow that is wonderfully chic, simple, and feminine.  See how they instantly make these small purses darling:

They can be tiny accents or steal the show and be the central focus of the piece. Either way, I adore their simple elegance.  Perfect for glitz and giggles.
